Reviving the Flow: Technopark’s Irrigation Project Reconnects with Sustainability

Rediscovering a Hidden Connection

A few years ago, the existence of a Wynland Water (Theewaterskloof) connection to Technopark was known, but details were unclear. Its exact location, water pressure availability, and how it connected into the Park’s infrastructure were all uncertain.

With valuable assistance from a Technopark-based company, this mystery was solved. The connection was successfully traced, along with a crucial link pipe leading to a main valve box on Techno Avenue. This discovery laid the foundation for a revived irrigation vision. The blue pipeline now visible in our infrastructure maps runs from the Wynland Water connection in the west to this main valve box in the east.

A Legacy System - Outdated and Unusable

Back in 1988, an irrigation system was installed as part of Technopark’s original development. It was designed to draw water from the Techno Dams via a pump station located near the eastern boundary, adjacent to the golf course.

Over time, however, the pump station and irrigation infrastructure deteriorated. Investigations revealed that both the old pipes and the pump station were beyond repair — damaged, derelict, and uneconomical to refurbish.

A New Vision Takes Shape

With the original system defunct, the next step was clear: design a modern solution. Once the Wynland Water connection and main valve box were located, UDSAfrica was again brought on board to help shape a future-proof irrigation network.

Two main pipelines now form the backbone of this system:

  • The blue pipeline runs from the valve box southeast along Techno Avenue, linking up at the roundabout with an irrigation line previously installed during an entrance road upgrade.

  • The red pipeline branches off toward the inlet canal of the Techno Dams, running along the northern perimeter of the dams.

These critical pipelines were completed in 2024, along with multiple access points for smaller-scale irrigation lines.

Branching Out - Smaller Irrigation Lines in Progress

As part of the ongoing garden maintenance contract, smaller irrigation pipes are being installed and connected to the newly constructed main lines. These layouts, as shown in the system diagrams, are designed to bring efficient, pressurised irrigation to targeted garden areas along Techno Avenue and the scenic dams corridor.

With all the major infrastructure now in place - from the Wynland Water supply and pressure lines to the main distribution network, and the integration of smaller branch pipes - Technopark can now ensure proper irrigation throughout key landscaped areas

Looking Ahead

This project not only revives a long-dormant system but symbolises a commitment to sustainable green spaces in our innovation-driven environment. With water flowing once more, Technopark's gardens are set to thrive - adding beauty, biodiversity, and value for everyone in the park.
