Infrastructure & Mobility Update
Technopark continues to work closely with the Stellenbosch Municipality to improve access, mobility, and overall functionality within the precinct. Below is an update from Piet van Blerk (Director : Parking & Roads) on key projects and initiatives currently underway:
TECHNOPARK LINK ROAD
Plans are in place to introduce an additional access route linking Technopark to Adam Tas Road (Polkadraai Road).
The proposed intersection will be located near the Municipality’s wastewater treatment works.
The new road will connect to the existing roundabout at Proton Road.
It will extend south of the Protea Hotel, pass the Capitec building, and cross both the Eerste River and the railway line before reaching Adam Tas Road.
The municipality has indicated that a civil engineering consultant will be appointed during 2026 to progress the detailed design phase. At this stage, no confirmed timeline for construction is available. Further updates will be shared as soon as new information becomes available.
NON-MOTORIZED TRANSPORT (NMT)
Technopark remains committed to improving pedestrian and cyclist accessibility.
Previous phases of the NMT route have already been completed along Techno Avenue, extending to Proton Road.
The Techstel SRA Board has now requested the extension of this route further along Techno Avenue up to the Protea Hotel.
This project will be implemented in collaboration with the Municipality, with the Board contributing toward project management costs.
Additional safety improvements requested include:
Two raised pedestrian crossings along Electron Road:
One west of the Time Square Building (aligned with future NMT routes)
One near Electron Road 21/23
If approved, construction of these crossings is anticipated to begin around September 2026.
The long-term goal is to implement sections of the NMT plan annually, or at minimum every second year.
PARKING & TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENTS
Addressing parking shortages remains a key priority.
A shortfall of approximately 1,088 parking bays was identified in 2020.
The Techstel SRA is currently engaging with the Municipality to explore the use of public open spaces for additional parking.
Encouragingly, several private companies have expressed willingness to support these initiatives.
Initial areas under consideration include:
Land south of Techno Avenue at the Electron Road roundabout
The open space opposite the Protea Hotel
ROAD SAFETY & MAINTENANCE
Several additional improvements have been raised with the Municipality:
Upgrades to the Techno Avenue / Proton Road / Electron Road intersection to enhance safety
Raised pedestrian crossings to help reduce speeding along Electron Road
Repainting of road markings across Technopark
Improvements to the Proton Road / Quantum Road intersection
LOOKING AHEAD
Technopark’s infrastructure upgrades form part of a broader, long-term vision to enhance accessibility, safety, and sustainability within the precinct. While some timelines remain subject to municipal processes, steady progress continues through strong collaboration between stakeholders.
Further updates will be shared in upcoming newsletters.
